Dewey’s journey - part 2

After his surgery on Feb 2nd, Dewey spent over 10-Days in the ICU. It was an emotional roller coaster as we journeyed through the post-op recovery stage.

We visited as much as we could to hold space, share hands-on healing, and ensure he felt our love. The time was a blur of bandage changes, abdominal lavages, iv fluids, drips, drains and drugs.

The science of the matter was not encouraging - nasty abdominal infections, skyrocketing lipid profiles, and fielding scoffs of ‘you’re doing what?! For a DONKEY?!’

Graced with incredible medical support - we followed our hearts, and called on our intuition to help guide decisions on his care. The team at @burwashequineservices was phenomenal, and accommodated our (sometimes strange!) requests.

A few days in, we felt called to take the donkeys out into the sunshine, under a big blue sky, and let them graze.

Dewey was alert, curious and a showed a zest for life not seen in the stall. We advocated for them to be put outside for as long as possible, despite the huge risk of opening sutures. A makeshift custom outdoor pen was crafted just for them.

Our hope was that fresh air, wild grass, blue sky, and sunshine, would work their healing magic.

And if not, then we hoped they would be the things that would take this little soul from us - wild and free.
